On Thursday, Malaysia Minister, Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, contested against false claims like the tourism industry of Langkawi is at danger because of hospitality worker shortage, emphasizing the fact that tourist arrivals continue to rise in this Malaysian archipelago .

He explained that in the recent past, to Langkawi, there was an average of 20 to 30 daily incoming flights. In the weekends and holidays, there were even more. During the Hari Raya Aidilfitri holidays, almost 80,436 people were recorded on the island. He said that the number of ferry trips have increased of late. On average, there four trips from Kuala Kedah and four from Kuala Perlis. On Thursday, he rejected the reports put forward by a local media, asserting that tourism is going through challenging times in terms of worker shortage.

He did not disagree totally with the fact that there was worker crisis but explained that the Labour Department estimated at 17,000 not the 30,000 workers as ascribed in the local media report by M Saaid, the executive director, Malaysian Association of Hotel Owners.

In the meantime, Mohd Firdaus Ahmad the Kedah Tourism, Arts and Culture, Youth and Sports, Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Committee Chairman stated that after Malaysia entered endemic phase, many people expressed their desire to work. He also said that hotels should make their recruitment rules easier for new workers.
